Tyler is the Rose capital of the nation and every year the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden blooms with over 15,000 rose bushes showcasing 600 varieties of rose.

On Sunday, Mayor Don Warren stood before guests proclaiming May 5th as Rose Sunday. The 91st Texas Rose Festival court officially welcoming everyone to the garden’s peak rose season means the start of months of events leading up to October.

“I’m really excited, honestly, I’ve been waiting all year, and back in January we had the first party really to get it started, and this one is, I would say, the main one that really is the opening to everything that’s up to come,” said Merritt Dial, Princess of the Texas Rose Festival.

With her attendants by her side, the 91st Texas Rose Festival Queen Frances Faulconer spoke about the importance of the day. She went on to thank everyone that keeps the roses in outstanding condition, and their continued dedication to tourism in Tyler.
