Rob McElhenney Watched the Ill-Fated Philadelphia Eagles Playoff Game During the Emmys

The Philadelphia Eagles season came to a sad end this week despite the best efforts of star players like Jason Kelce. Philadelphia native and award-winning actor Rob McElhenney is among the Eagles' dedicated fanbase—so much so that he tuned in to the Eagles' playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while sitting at the 2024 Emmy Awards on Jan. 15.

McElhenney, the creator of the beloved sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, shared a photo from his seat at the Emmys next to his wife and It's Always Sunny co-star Kaitlin Olson. "Who schedules the Emmys the same night as the Eagles," McElhenny captioned the photo. In the snap, Olson takes a selfie with McElhenney in the background hunched over his phone watching the playoff game.

It's not like McElhenney was at the Emmys for no reason. The actor is also a co-owner of Welsh soccer team Wrexham A. F. C. along with fellow Hollywood heavyweight Ryan Reynolds. Together, the two star and executive produce the FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, chronicling their road to co-ownership and their work to improve the club's standing in the league.

In the end, Welcome to Wrexham took home five of the six awards it was nominated for, including Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program, and Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program. "Worth it, I guess," McElhenney posted online after his win.

Sadly, the Eagles didn't fare as well as McElhenney did at the Emmys. The team lost to Tampa Bay by more than 20 points, costing the team a shot at possibly playing in the Super Bowl next month. Needless to say, it's probably not how Jason Kelce wanted his last NFL game ever to play out.
