I have a confession: sometimes I really, really want to go to prom. No, not actual prom (I'm not some take-me-back-to-high-school Drew Barrymore character, promise), but a prom-like event—somewhere everyone has to wear a fancy dress and spend hours on their hair and makeup and we take photos on a digital camera and make *memories* for years to come.

Word on the street is that prom isn't as formal these days, with teens opting for beachy waves and gowns that are essentially sundresses. To which I say...cute, but dress up and be frivolous while you can!!! Luckily, an angel in the form of Rihanna is forcing us to reexamine our relationship with dressy glam. How, you ask? By rocking perfect prom hair on a casual Saturday night.

On April 6, Rih appeared in Los Angeles for a dinner at Giorgio Baldi restaurant. Dressed cool as ever in ripped jeans, a graphic tee, and gigantic cream satin coat (is it giving prom or wedding?), she swept her platinum blonde locks tightly back in a bouncy curled updo. While a look on its own, it truly reminds me of Y2K teen movie formal dance hair—my best comparison is Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You, mixed with the edgy glamour of Pamela Anderson's iconic messy updo.

Likely crafted by Rihanna's regular hairstylist, Yusef Williams, the style added at least four inches to her height. I would love to see the back, as it appears a few loose curls are tickling the nape of her neck. Another highlight is the shine: each gold pinned-up wave is impressively light reflective.

To complete the glam, the Grammy winner wore her eyebrows thin and light, finishing her makeup with deep blush and a pink glossy lip (courtesy of Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb, perhaps?) with dark liner. She accessorized with a black Dior saddle bag, black sunglasses, and numerous strands of pearls.

So, prom girlies, take my advice: There's nothing wrong with going a little funky with the dress. And when you make your hair appointment? Send these photos as inspo.
