Riders Show Off Tricks On Custom Fixed Gear BMX Bikes In San Francisco

Two groups of riders that mountain bikers nearly universally agree are crazy are BMX and Fixed-gear riders.

As if either on their own were not enough, one group of riders decided to combine these two sports into fixed BMX riding. Watch their edit in the streets of San Francisco below.

In this video, Matt Reyes and his friends do urban hits all around the streets of San Francisco. Amazingly they can grind and stall despite having a fixed rear hub.

Fixed-gear bikes are very popular in cities. The people who ride them often are bike messengers and make deliveries quicker than cars can in heavy traffic. This requires darting in and out of traffic and splitting lanes, which is quite risky.

For fun, riders have begun to lace BMX rims to fixie hubs to see what it's all about. The results are crazy. One notable feature of these fixed BMX bikes is their gear ratio. In single-speed biking of all kinds, the gear ratio is a huge decision. Riders are locked into what they choose!

For the fixed BMX riders who want to stall while riding fakie, a big gear ratio (bigger chainring smaller rear cog which is harder to pedal forward) means that rolling backward will not move the pedals very much.
