Welcome to the weekly Port City Foodies newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Allison Ballard. So, true story. I had to take a break while writing this newsletter. See, I was a little hungry and just looking for the right photo to include for Little Asia Bistro made it just that much worse. I had to go make myself a sandwich before I could finish. While it couldn’t match the savory deliciousness of these Indian dishes, it was adequate for return to work. So here goes—a look at this week’s food-and-drink news.

Daal Makhani

Or black lentils in a creamy sauce. That's the dish from Little Asia Bistro that’s really been on my mind. It was recommended by a friend, along with the Baigan Bharta, or mashed eggplant with spices. Both were delicious -- and I had a chance to talk to the family behind this hidden gem restaurant on College Road while I tried them. It's near other faves like Taste of Italy and Sabor Hispano. Sammiches and soft shells

While you can no longer find Subway in downtown Wilmington, it was still a good week for sandwiches because the long awaited second location of CheeseSmith is now open in Landfall Shopping Center. In fact, when I when to take these photos of the new space. I met a women who, unprompted, said ‘Yay! There’re open.’

It’s really worth it to pay attention to chef and restaurant social media accounts. There have been so, so many posts about soft-shell crabs in both traditional and unique preparations. I had a chance to chat with local chef Carson Jewell of manna about the delicacy. I also included a few of the dishes you may be able to find locally. And even more delicious pics have been posted since I wrote the article – including soft shells in a Benedict at The Keg and Egg, cool sandwiches at Pine Valley Market, and fried on a salad at Rx Chicken & Oysters.

More news

You know, a lot has been happening at the airport. If you're planning to travel (or are just curious) here's a look at the new food and drink options at the newly expanded and renovated airport in Wilmington. Also, a Krystal is headed (sorta) this way. And in the downtown area, a new Italian restaurant is on the way; a waterfront cocktail lounge has a new owner; and an event space and historic destination are on the market. My friend John Staton has the details on that, and the latest in the ongoing Edward Teach Brewery saga.
