Resident Evil 2 Mobile Port Images May Have Been Leaked

Resident Evil 2 is available on a lot of platforms, but its absence from mobile is a little odd. Well, we now know that a portable port of the game was in development at some point, and new images from the same are available for anyone to see. But there's a catch!

The "Resident Evil 2 Remake Mobile project", as seen on the LinkedIn portfolio of a senior concept artist at Netease Games, has been in development since at least February 2020. The project is listed as still under development, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it has already been cancelled.

The images, which you can check out here, show a significant decrease in graphical fidelity from the original game, suggesting that it was/will be a downgraded port. The concept art, and what appears to be an in-game screenshot, feature a lower level of polygonal detail than what you’ll find in the console version of the game.

Here’s the kicker - it’s most likely that the concept art is for the LifeAfter X Resident Evil collaboration, which occurred back in 2020. LifeAfter is a mobile survival game that features an uncanny resemblance to Resident Evil, and is developed by NetEase games. That’s the most probably scenario, which is sure to disappoint fans who wanted to play as Leon and Claire on their phones.

Playing Resident Evil games on your phone is not an imaginable scenario. Just recently we saw Capcom port the RE4 Remake and Resident Evil Village to iPhones and iPads, with surprisingly decent performance. Other AAA developers are also starting to port their console games to mobile. Kojima Productions recently released Death Stranding for the iPhone, and Ubisoft is working on a port of Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Considering Capcom’s recent RE mobile ports, it’s possible that a proper RE2 port may be in the works. After all, if modern iPhones can run RE4, they can surely run RE2 with the proper optimizations. RE2 also ushered in the modern era of Capcom's remakes, so bringing that to mobile would be a good way to get a new audience invested in the series.
