Rescuers Attempt to Save Woman and Dog Who Fell From Hawaii's 'Stairway to Heaven' Hiking Trail

Hiking and trail usage skyrocketed over the last few years after the outdoors became essential for people wanting to escape the house during the early months of COVID-19. And if you’ve gone out on trails, you might’ve noticed a surge in dogs joining in on the adventure too. While we love seeing fur babies out and about, it's so important to be extra cautious with them.

Every dog owner needs to hear this reminder after the news broke of a recent rescue in Hawaii. A woman was hiking an off-limit trail with her dog on September 4 when the dog fell approximately 50 feet. Take a look at part of the rescue that Hawaii News Now shared on Instagram.

Wow, this is so scary. We're glad both the pet owner and her dog are safe. The Honolulu Fire Department responded to the call and was able to pinpoint their location thanks to the woman's phone. First responders did not immediately release information about the dog's condition, but luckily, they said there were no serious injuries. That's great to hear!

This woman was hiking Hawaii's famous "Stairway to Heaven" trail, which has been closed to the public for decades, with her 55-pound dog. This hiking trail is considered very dangerous as it's slippery and very steep so we can't imagine how frightened this dog must've felt. And even though the trail is off-limits, that doesn't stop people from climbing and risking the possible fine that comes with it.

As more and more people are venturing outside and traveling with dogs, it's important to always be prepared. We recommend keeping your dog on a leash while hiking. Not only will it make other hikers feel comfortable and many trails require it, but it will also prevent your dog from chasing wildlife and reduce the habitat damage they could cause. We hope this recent rescue in Hawaii serves as a reminder to be extra cautious whenever you're hiking with or without your pets.
