How recycled cooking oil can be used beyond the kitchen

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — With millions of people visiting Las Vegas per year, they’re indulging in gaming, entertainment, and dining out. Las Vegas Strip properties are doing what they can to reduce their carbon footprint and create eco-friendly habits.

It’s an ongoing partnership Raul Salas from RENUoil of America has maintained with the Aria resort and other MGM properties.

They start in the kitchen by extending the life of frying oil ensuring the freshness of the quality of the food you eat.

“We actually come in nightly and we have this machine that will actually remove the oil out of the fryer and the machine will actually filter the oil so it can be reused again in the same fryer,” Salas said.

Their oil filtration program also helps with oil costs.

“So typically our average client will see about a 40% to 50% reduction so whatever they were using before we’re able to reduce it,” Salas added.

On average, a RENUoil technician will clean out 70 fryers a night which equals up to 560 gallons of oil. Removing all the impurities means the oil can be used for another day or two. Recycling the oil also cuts down on packaging.

“You also don’t have these unnecessary boxes being thrown away, it’s so robust to think about how much you’re saving in all kinds of ways,” Salas explained.

The recovered oil is then converted into biotane, it’s a patented biodiesel also used in community fleets like school buses which use renewable fuel.

With this initiative in the works for over 10 years Salas said he’s proud to be part of a green campaign in our community.

“You’re also helping the giant gaming industry with their sustainability and at the same time you’re also giving a great service. It feels really nice,” he said.

Remember to never throw your cooking oil down the kitchen sink. Solidified oil can safely be thrown in the trash.
