Ready for the Memorial Day holiday weekend? Check out these events in Volusia-Flagler

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the traditional summer vacation season, an occasion celebrated with an assortment of activities at the World’s Most Famous Beach.

From music to food and solemn remembrances, there will be plenty of opportunities to savor the long weekend and the meaning behind it.

Here’s are highlights of what’s on tap:

'Star Spangled Summer' kicks off at Bandshell

On Memorial Day weekend, a popular summer staples returns with the first show in the summer-long “Star Spangled Summer Concert Series,” an annual free Saturday night showcase at the Bandshell.

Presented by Friends of the Bandshell, this year’s Star-Spangled lineup of pop-rock tribute acts will launch on Saturday with the twin bill of Rushour and KISS America, Rush and KISS tribute acts, respectively.

General admission to the Saturday Star-Spangled shows is free, with audience members welcome to bring along personal chairs to use in the GA section.

VIP reserved seating is also available for $15, with those tickets available online at DaytonaBandshell.com and ticketmaster.com. Reserved tickets also will be sold, if available, on show days at the Peabody Auditorium Box Office (600 Auditorium Blvd). and the Daytona Bandshell Box Office.

Concerts start at 7:15 p.m. followed by fireworks over the beach at 9:45 p.m.

Also at Bandshell: ‘80s ‘Throwback Jam’

To mark the big holiday weekend, the Bandshell also will host the 6th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Summer Throwback Jam, a ticketed multi-act throwback concert on Sunday.

This year, the show features 1980s pop star Lisa Lisa, who burned up the charts as part of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with hits such as “Head to Toe” and “I Wonder If I Take You Home.”  Rounding out the bill: TKA, Judy Torres, George Lamond, Lissette Melendez, Rob Base and Betty Dee of Sweet Sensation, along with a Pair of DJs also spinning dance tracks.

Show time: 6 p.m.

Holiday weekend on ‘The Roof’

If you can’t wait for those Bandshell events, the music and fun starts on Friday at a holiday weekend entertainment showcase at The Roof, the upper deck outdoor space above Joe’s Crab Shack on the Daytona Beach Pier.

Hosted by Captain KRB, the weekend-long event features sets by a lineup of Central Florida acts that include reggae outfit Brothers Within at 7 p.m. Friday; rockers Are Friends Electric at 7 p.m. Saturday; singer-songwriter Beartoe at 3 p.m. Sunday; and country-rocker Ashley Estevez at 5 p.m. Monday.

There also will be fireworks over the beach at 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

Honoring freedom’s sacrifices

The sacrifices made by U.S. military veterans to preserve our freedom will be honored at a Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at the Ponce Inlet Veterans Memorial at Davies Lighthouse Park, 4931 S. Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet.

The ceremony is presented by the Ponce Inlet Veteran's Memorial Association. Visit ponce-inlet.org for details.

In Ormond Beach, there also will be a Memorial Day Remembrance Event at 9 a.m. Monday at Rockefeller Gardens, on the east banks of the Halifax River, south of Granada Boulevard.

The event is presented by the City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department’s Memorial Remembrance Committee, American Legion Post 267 and American Legion Unit 267.

In Flagler, another Memorial Day ceremony

On Monday, the City of Palm Coast will host a Memorial Day ceremony to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to the U.S. military.

It begins at 8 a.m. at Heroes Memorial Park, 2860 Palm Coast Pkwy. NW, Palm Coast (1/2 mile west of the Flagler County Library). Parking is available along Corporate Drive and at the library.
