Ready to freshen your plant beds? Here's when and where to get free mulch in Fort Collins

Garden and yard season is here, and you might be looking to freshen up your garden beds or cover up that nutrient-rich compost with mulch.

Fort Collins residents can get mulch for free, provided by the city's Forestry Division.

Mulch is available year-round at two sites: Timberline Recycling Center, 1903 S. Timberline Road, and Gardens on Spring Creek, 2145 Centre Ave. You only have to load it up yourself.

"We do our very best to keep those bins topped off," said Ernie Wintergerst, senior supervisor.

At the upcoming annual mulch pickup event, though, city staff will use a front-end loader to help residents fill their open-top vehicles or trailers with free mulch. That event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at 1380 Hoffman Mill Road.

You can enter only from northbound Lemay Avenue, and the exit is also onto northbound Lemay. You must cover your load before leaving the site.

The city says to expect long lines and wait times. Commercial businesses are not eligible for this program.
