High school presented its own set of challenges, but dealing with hormonal acne wasn't one of them for me. I hit the genetic lottery in that sense—virtually everyone in my family has had smooth, crystal-clear skin their whole life. That was the case for me as well, until about two years ago when I went off my birth control. I expected some changes with my body, having been on the pill for over 10 years, but nothing could have prepared me for the relentless acne flare-ups.

I went through the storm of it, and things have since calmed down, but I’m still left with the hyperpigmentation. I’ve tried tons of products on the market to reduce those dark spots, but the only thing that’s actually made a difference is Eadem’s Milk Marvel Dark Spot Serum.

Founded by women of color, Eadem’s serum is formulated specifically for those with melanated skin to plump, hydrate, minimize pores, and fade stubborn dark spots. The fragrance-free serum is infused with amber algae and an encapsulated form of vitamin C, which work to brighten, fight signs of aging, and even skin tone without stripping your complexion. It also includes glycerin, which pushes moisture deeper into the skin, and niacinamide to soothe inflammation, improve skin’s texture, and combat against new breakouts.

Implementing the Milk Marvel serum into my already established routine was easy. I apply it after cleansing my face and use the dropper to dispense three lines of serum on problem areas like my cheeks and forehead. It has a light and milky consistency that absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving a glowy and plump complexion immediately after application. My pores are also much smaller, and textured areas are softened. I use the serum three to four times a week, making sure to apply sunscreen afterward to prevent skin sensitivity, and I’ve yet to experience any new breakouts.

After about five months of consistent use, my dark spots have gotten significantly lighter without discoloring the natural color of my skin like other dark spot treatments I’ve used. My pores are much smaller even on days I don’t use the serum, and my complexion overall is much more radiant and youthful. Even Serena Williams mentions using the milky serum post-pregnancy to combat dark spots in a recent skincare routine video with Vogue.
