How to prevent your pets from getting ticks & fleas

MONTOUR FALLS, N.Y. (WETM) – With the warmer weather moving back into our area; it’s important to get your pets treated for ticks and fleas.

“Year round flea and tick prevention is really important,” said Executive Director of the Humane Society of Schuyler County Georgie Taylor.

Fleas and ticks live all around us. In places you would expect and some you might not.

“Fleas and ticks are quite prevalent in our environment, our natural environment. They live in tall grasses, in wooded areas and inside, they can even live in carpets. Fleas and ticks can actually survive at temperatures anywhere above forty degrees,” said Taylor.

If your pet has fleas or ticks, the effects on them could be long term.

“Fleas can cause tapeworm infestations and they can also cause a condition called flea dermatitis, which is a very nasty skin infection particularly with dogs. Ticks of course, we know that they can often carry Lyme’s Disease. It can be very painful. It can be debilitating. It affects an animal’s joints and it can ultimately, if left untreated, it can result in death,” said Taylor.

Pet of the Week Features

There are a wide variety of well tested flea and tick preventatives available.

“Veterinarian approved tick and flea preventatives have been well-tested, but we always do suggest that pet owners check with their veterinarian to determine the most effective flea and tick preventative for their pet,” said Taylor.
