Precious Sea Otter Adorably Taps to Ask For Treats

Sea otters are always so fun to watch. They're busy, fast, and always seem to be in a good mood. k_passionate is an animal trainer in Tacoma, Washington, and she always shares the funniest and cutest videos of her animals with us all on TikTok. She shared a video on Thursday, January 11th of one of her sea otters, Clara, doing the coolest trick, and I could watch it all day!

Clara has been trained to tap for treats. K calls them "tippy tappies" and it's absolutely adorable! The video starts with Clara swimming around, and then heading up out of the water to meet K. K holds out her hand in the shape of a fist, and Clara gives her a boop with her nose...I guess that's the sea other equivalent of a fist bump! K gives her a treat, and you've gotta see how Clara asks for another one!

Too cute, right? "Those are sharp!" I'm guessing that is @K referring to Clara's claws...I wouldn't want to find out! Those tippy tappies are just adorable and I wish we could see more of them! I wasn't the only one who swooned over Clara's treat taps. One commenter got more than 4,400 likes when she pointed out, "Those are some heckin tippy tappies!" and K replied, "She is the best at tippy tappies!" @GhosthostLauren added, "I didn't know what tappies I was expecting but I am not disappointed." Same here, Lauren!

Fun Sea Otter Facts

I think it's fairly safe to say that we all think sea otters are adorable (have you seen them make otter biscuits?!), and many people compare them to dogs. @gg_exotic wondered, "Are otters dogs of the sea? Or are dogs otters of the land?" I realized other than thinking that they're super cute, I didn't know much about them, so I headed to Google.

According to World Wildlife Fund, sea otters can live their entire lives without leaving the water. They are the smallest marine mammal, and don't have blubber to keep them warm. Because of this, they actually have the densest fur of any animal on earth... "an estimated 1 million hairs per square inch". They groom constantly, because when their fur gets dirty it affects how warm they are. Also to help them keep warm, they have to eat 20 - 40% of their body weight every day, so they spend a lot of time looking for food. They are one of the only animals that uses a tool to feed (they use rocks to help them open the shells of things like clams and oysters) and will flip rocks over to find food. They also can catch fish with their paws, not just their mouths.

And my absolute favorite fact was this one: In order not to lose each other by drifting away in the water while they sleep, sea otters hold each other's paws! How cute is that!
