POWDER Magazine Honors First Issue’s Iconic Cover With A Limited Edition Hoodie

POWDER founders Jake and Dave Moe couldn’t have known that their magazine's impact would lead to their names being permanently cemented into skiing's history books.

In honor of the recent announcement that the brothers will be inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, POWDER is releasing a hoodie designed with the magazine’s first ever cover from Volume 1, Issue 1- Winter ‘72/’73.

The hoodie is available as part of POWDER's newly-released Box Set #2 — perfect for those who missed out on last week's drop. There will only be 250 sets available.

You can click here to get your hoodie.

Box Set #2 features the First Issue Winter '72/'73 cover hoodie, a sleek and functional box styled with the POWDER logo, and a copy of POWDER's brand new Winter '23/'24 Photo Annual for $54.99.

For those of you who purchased last week's drop, and don't wish to purchase an additional copy of the magazine, the box and hoodie are available for $49.99. Simply select the 'Without Magazine' option under 'Box Choice'.

More information about Volume 1, Issue 1 below:

The Winter ‘72/’73 issue, otherwise known as Volume 1, Issue 1, sports an iconic black and white image of skiers descending a powdery slope in the foreground of an other-worldly landscape.

As Jake and Dave mentioned in a recent video, they were inspired by the peace movements and free thinkers of the 1970s in creating the magazine. It’s no surprise that the cover fits the bill of the psychedelic renaissance that defined the decade.

The image of the skiers was captured by Dave Moe in The Monashees of British Columbia. Jake is one of the featured skiers.

POWDER Magazine

Important to note that while the brothers' talent was out of this world, they didn't have an opportunity to travel to space to capture the stunning image of the Earth and Moon. That was sourced from stock imagery. If only...

Hans Ludwig, also known by his literary moniker ‘The Jaded Local’ and a featured contributor to the POWDER Winter '23/'24 Photo Annual, says that Volume 1, Issue 1 became an unofficial North Star for future ski editors and writers for years to come:

POWDER 1.1 was a shot of black and white psychedelia across the bows of ski culture. But even forty-plus years later, editors could still turn to these early issues as the radical founding statements they were, and see exactly what the Moe brothers wanted them to do.”

As many of you know by now, POWDER is back in print and we couldn’t be more excited about getting skiing photos and stories back into your hands the way Jake and Dave Moe intended 50 years ago.
