Portland’s Abernethy Elementary School pilots a daily Bike Bus

(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — Abernethy Elementary School’s Bike Bus is trying something new this spring. For the final eight weeks of the school year, Abernethy’s Bike Bus is running every morning before school.

Most of the Bike Buses at schools around Portland run once a week.

On Earth Day, the two-year anniversary of the Bike Bus movement kicking off in Portland, Abernethy started daily rides.

“The point of that is to see like, can we do it? What happens? Do kids still ride it? Do people still love it? Does it still have the same kind of energy and vibes and fun as it does on the once-a-week ride? And logistically, can we actually pull this off? Can we get a leader volunteer and corkers and a sweep on both routes, every day? It’s a lot of volunteer coordination,” Abernethy Bike Bus leader Aaron Stoertz said. “It’s really to see, can we come up with a good working functional model for an elementary school to run an everyday Bike Bus?”

Funding from Abernethy’s Parent Teacher Association is covering a stipend for a college student to act as Bike Bus coordinator for the eight-week pilot program.

Savannah Bedford, a Portland State University student, is responsible for coordinating parent volunteers and handling other logistics, like the first aid kits and speakers that are carried on each ride.
