Pet Community Center tackling overpopulation in Nashville with ‘The Big Spayback’

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On Friday, the Pet Community Center in Nashville will be spaying and neutering 45 pets. It’s a big number, all in the name of helping control the pet population.

Just to put that in perspective, the average vet clinic does about five to eight surgeries in one day. However, fixing 45 pets on Friday, May 17 has the potential to reduce the pet population by over 12 million animals over the course of the next decade.

“Spay/neuter is our single most powerful solution to address pet overpopulation. There just simply aren’t enough homes for the pets we have,” said Brandon Dyce, the president and CEO of the Pet Community Center. “So, by making spay/neuter financially friendly for all pet owners in our community, one, it not only gives them access to a service that makes their pet healthier, reduces the risk of certain diseases, but then it also decreases the amount of unwanted puppies and kittens that enter shelters every year.”

On top of the 45 surgeries, the organization is trying to raise $45,000 to continue to provide these services. All donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000.

The Pet Community Center is Nashville’s only nonprofit veterinary clinic that offers financially-friendly vet services, spay/neuter services, and other healthcare options to any pet parent in Davidson County.

“The Big Spayback” is a yearly event, but an every day mission. The Pet Community Center spays and neuters about 30 pets per week in its clinic, offering low-cost surgeries to pet owners without qualifications.
