Pensacola care team delivers healthy food to patients in need

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — A balanced diet is crucial to living a healthy life, but a care team at Ascension Sacred Heart understands not everyone has access to that.

“Many times we learned that a patient will sometimes not be able to afford food because of medication costs or will not be able to afford medication because of food costs,” Kelly Rozier an R.N. with Ascension Sacred Heart said. “So we try to provide nutritious food and then many of our clients live in food deserts so there’s no grocery stores that provide good produce.”

They’ve teamed up with Feeding the Gulf Coast to deliver fresh fruits, vegetables and protein right to patient’s doors.

“With this we’re able to go out into the community and it breathes a whole new light on what our patients are going through the challenges they have and what they need,” Rozier said.

The program started during COVID, when nurses were going into homes to check on their patients. They realized how many were in need.

Delivering food to around 40 patients, and serving people in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, the community outreach team has a vision for something bigger.

Within the next year, they’re looking to also open a food pantry on site.

“I do think there’s benefit with patients being able to come in and select their own items and being able to help them there,” Rozier said.
