You sometimes hear about people wearing a lucky pair of underwear, though how seriously someone takes the superstition depends on the person. In the sports world, having a go-to article of clothing isn't an entirely uncommon practice; just ask Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Former Chiefs player Chad Henne, who played alongside Mahomes for five years, first hinted at Mahomes' unique game day dress in an ESPN interview earlier this year. "Sunday, it’s the same pair [of underwear],” Henne said at the time. "This has to be a superstition and good luck charm, for sure."

On Nov. 13, Mahomes admitted on ESPN's ManningCast with Peyton and Eli Manning that the rumors were true. "First, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them," Mahomes said honestly of his lucky underwear. "At the same time, I threw them on that first season, we had a pretty good season that season."

"I only wear them for game day though, so they’re not too worn down," the two-time MVP noted. "They’re not like these nasty [underwear]. I clean them."

How often he throws them in the wash, however, depends on the Chiefs' success on the field. "I wash them every once in a while at least. I mean if we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them, you know? I’ve just got to keep it rolling. As long as we’re winning, I’ll keep the superstition going," he said.

The Chiefs are currently one of the top teams in the NFL, racking up a six-game win streak earlier this season and notching a victory against the Miami Dolphins in their most recent game in Germany. It's safe to say Mahomes might need some extra-strength laundry detergent by the end of the season.
