'She panicked and thought we all left': See the adorable way this dog comforted herself

Modern dogs — descendants of the gray wolf — are a very different breed than their mighty, carnivorous ancestors. Some have been known to startle themselves when they pass gas too loudly; others whine like babies until their human comes home.

Both seem to be the product of domestication — which has led to an incredibly strong relationship between humans and dogs. Thanks to this co-evolution, the connection is so strong that dogs can sense human emotions, can tell when some humans are about to have a seizure, can sense pregnancy, and can even interpret our speech (or motions).

But when humans aren’t around, dogs have their own ways of coping.

One Reddit user showed just how attached his dog, Luna, is to him when he posted on Instagram this adorable photo of her comforting herself when she believed everyone had left the house.

“When I leave the house my dog takes one of my shoes and lays with it (she never chews them) – well, this weekend my wife and kids were out of town and I went to Home Depot for 30 minutes and came home to this. I think she panicked and thought we all left. Broke my heart,” Justin Grosjean wrote on Reddit.

He also said: “She’s my best friend! I love this dog more than I’ll ever be able to express. She almost died from IMHA and I spent a year and more money than I thought [possible] nursing her back to health. I don’t think I’ll ever bond with a dog quite like I have with her.” IMHA, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, causes the immune system to react against red cells as it would against bacteria or a virus, resulting in anemia and preventing oxygen delivery.

Luna’s way of comforting herself surrounded by Justin’s shoes inspired another Reddit user, SchnoodleDoodleDo, to write a poem from the pup’s point of view.

The Reddit user wrote, “When daddy leaves the house i have to go n find a shoe / It’s not like i destroy it, but it’s what i like to do / To go ‘n find a special one, ‘n bring it to my bed / It comforts me n makes me think that he is here instead / but once when mommy took the kids, daddy went out, too / i did my thing n found a shoe, but then i wanted two, / n then i got another, n another made it four / n soon i was surrounded by my dad’s shoes on the floor…. / the smell of him surrounded me – i finally could rest / n then i heard his FOOTSTEPS – that’s the sound i like the best! / you see, i truly love this guy, much more than you’d believe…. / ( tonight i’m taking All his shoes – so he can *Never* leave! ;)”

Luna deserves all the shoes in the world.
