  • Oprah Winfrey plans to “dismantle the current diet culture” beginning with an upcoming special in partnership with WeightWatchers.

  • Making The Shift: A New Way to Think About Weight will air on WeightWatchers’ YouTube May 9 at 6 p.m. EST.

  • The star opens up about weight loss and shame.

Last year, Oprah Winfrey said that she’s “absolutely done with shaming” people who take weight loss drugs after revealing that she herself uses them to avoid “yo-yo dieting.” Since then, she has carried on the conversation, and now, is sharing her plan to “dismantle the current diet culture” (and talk about science-backed weight loss methods) in a new live special.

Winfrey told fans on Instagram that she’s teaming up with WeightWatchers (after announcing her exit from its board of directors in February) to host the May 9 live event called Making The Shift: A New Way to Think About Weight on the company’s YouTube, which will air from 6 to 9 p.m. EST.

According to a WeightWatchers press release, the discussion will do the aforementioned dismantling by leaning into “science and the exciting evolution of weight and our health.” The statement adds that “the powerful discussion will unpack the multifaceted, preconceived notions we have about weight,” including “how we can reframe harmful narratives surrounding our weight and our bodies.”

“As we reconcile the shame stories we have all experienced, I’m on a mission to keep this conversation going and help us better understand the complexity of weight health and how we can use the science and what we know now to enhance our lives,” Winfrey said in the statement.

She will do so with the help of special guests including Rebel Wilson, Amber Riley, professor and columnist Tressie McMillan Cottom, and more, including science and medical experts.

The event comes after the conversation initiated by Winfrey’s March ABC special, Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution. It garnered tons of reaction on social media, which alerted Winfrey that there’s much more to discuss. “It’s clear that we need to keep talking,” Winfrey says in the upcoming special’s trailer. “What we want to do is unpack everything we’ve internalized about diet culture, and how our weight somehow reflected our worth.”

The special will feature a live studio audience and welcome the participation of virtual viewers. To have a chance to interact, you can “reserve a seat” for the event for free and receive a digital guide to follow along via WeightWatchers’ website.
