One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Is Still Getting New Characters, Somehow

ONE PIECE PIRATE WARRIORS 4 Gold Roger

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is an excellent game – honestly, probably the best One Piece game ever made – and despite an already massive roster, it’s still getting DLC characters four years later. The next character to be added to the game is a great one too: the king of the pirates himself.

Bandai Namco, via the official One Piece video games Twitter account, announced yesterday that Gol D. Roger, the king of the pirates, would be headed to One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4. Roger will be included in wave 6 of the game’s DLC, alongside two other characters that have not yet been announced. The release date for the DLC pack has not been revealed.

DLC 6 for the game is included in Character Pass 2, which also includes DLC 4 and 5. Those DLC added characters such as Kaidou, Yamato, and Film Red versions of Koby and Shanks. Some of these characters even have form changes that massively change the way they fight, effectively adding two characters instead of one.

The One Piece: Pirate Warriors series is a crossover game from Omega Force, as part of the greater Musou series, known commonly in the West as Dynasty Warriors. It combines action gameplay and combat against a large group of enemies with strategy elements. The series – both One Piece: Pirate Warriors and the Musou series – have been getting more popular in recent years, and that’s a great thing, because they’re both excellent.

Still, it’s curious to see a game like this still getting DLC characters added four years after release. It’s not particularly surprising, given the game sold over 3 million copies, but smaller, more niche games typically only get a year or two of support.

It’s a little bit similar to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, which is still getting new DLC on a very regular basis almost eight years after its release in 2016. Just last week, it was announced that Xenoverse 2 would be getting a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrade, so it seems like Bandai Namco is not ready to move on just yet either.
