One of Miami’s best chefs made his big comeback with this restaurant. Now it’s closing

A restaurant from one of Miami’s best chefs is closing in Wynwood.

MaryGold’s by Brad Kilgore, located on the first floor of the Arlo Wynwood hotel at 2217 NW Miami Ct., will serve its last dinner on June 1.

Known for such dishes as beignets topped with oxtail, a stunning fennel-infused Caesar salad and a short rib vaca frita, the modern American restaurant is closing to make way for a new Kilgore concept, scheduled to open in the same space later this year.

Kilgore said that he’s “excited to share my vision with the world come this fall.”

“The vibrancy of Miami has always inspired me to bring new, fresh and creative ideas to my culinary creations in order to match the flare and excitement that you see every day in the Magic city,” he said in a statement. “I have been chewing on a new restaurant concept for a while, and I am looking forward to exploring the time-honored culinary heritages, flavors and experiences close to my heart.”

MaryGold’s opened at the Arlo, Wynwood’s first hotel, in November 2022 in a partnership with Bar Lab. Opening a restaurant in Wynwood was a homecoming of sorts for Kilgore, who opened his first restaurant Alter there in 2015, one of the first chefs to open in the transitioning neighborhood.

Alter closed in 2020, a victim of the pandemic along with Kilgore’s Design District restaurants Ember and Kaido. The chef had just recently put Alter’s beloved soft egg dish on the MaryGold’s menu. He also opened a fast casual spot, Oise, at the Oasis Wynwood at the end of 2023, an “Itameshi”-style restaurant that blends the traditional elements of Italian and Japanese cuisine.

Higher Ground, the third floor bar and restaurant on the Arlo Wynwood’s third floor, will remain open and continue to serve pizzas from Kilgore’s company Pizza Freak Co.
