The director behind Bombshell and Trumbo has announced his next project, a reimagining of 1989's The War of the Roses for Searchlight Pictures.

Titled The Roses, the film follows an outwardly perfect couple, whose simmering jealousy boils over when the husband's career implodes, revealing cracks in the facade of their ideal family life.

The 1989 film, directed by Danny DeVito, was adapted from the Warren Adler novel and starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. It scored a BAFTA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and three Golden Globe noms.

Now, Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch will step into the roles in the film which will be produced and directed by four-time Emmy-winning Jay Roach and written by two-time Oscar nominee Tony McNamara.

Cumberbatch and Colman are also credited as producers on the project, with Cumberbatch producing under his SunnyMarch banner alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland.

Other producers on the project include Tom Carver and Ed Sinclair of South of the River, and Jonathan R. Adley and Michael Adler from Adler Entertainment Trust serve as executive producers.

Searchlight's president, Matthew Greenfield, said, "The Roses is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story". He also said, "With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life."
