Free Guy 2

Whether you're a security guard, a bank teller or someone who casually enjoys running over unsuspecting townspeople with your car, it's time to celebrate. A sequel to the 2021 hit action-comedy Free Guy is in the works. The movie, which starred Ryan Reynolds as an NPC (non-player character) in a Grand Theft Auto-esque video game who one day becomes sentient, arrived in theaters at the tail end of the pandemic. The film also starred Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery and Taika Waititi, and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects.

In a recent interview with Parade, Free Guy's director Shawn Levy, when asked about a sequel, said that it's very much in the works. "We are developing a script at Disney and 20th Century," he confirmed, "and we would love to make a sequel, but we would not make a sequel if it wasn't going to be as good, or hopefully better, than the first. But we're trying."

Levy went on to compare the possible Free Guy sequel with one for The Adam Project, which he confirmed would not be happening. "[The Adam Project] felt self-contained and exactly what we wanted it to be. We're not going to develop a sequel because the idea doesn't feel right for that. Free Guy does feel right, and we're going to give it a shot."

Levy is a director and producer with an incredible win rate, having helmed projects such as Cheaper by the Dozen, Night at the Museum and Free Guy as well as co-creating Stranger Things. His latest project, an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See,, arrives on Netflix Nov. 2.

Of all his projects, however, Levy says that Free Guy is a fan favorite. "Ryan and I, just yesterday, were talking about the enduring love for that movie," he told Parade. "It came out at the tail end of the pandemic and did really well, but would probably do a lot better now. To this day, it's one of the movies that Ryan and I get stopped about."

Levy certainly has his plate full at the moment directing Deadpool 3, producing the final season of Stranger Things and working on his very own Star Wars movie, but fingers crossed he can find time for Free Guy 2. The world needs another Jodie Comer cover of a Mariah Carey song.
