New Jersey teacher accused of calling students the 'N-word' suspended

A teacher at Penns Grove Middle School in Penns Grove, N.J. has been suspended after allegedly calling students a racist slur during class.

The man, whom Philadelphia’s WPVI identifies as a white male teacher, will serve a 120-day suspension with pay, after he allegedly took a Chromebook out of two students’ hands after he caught them laughing at something at the screen. He is accused of then saying under his breath, “He is tired of putting up with us, like, the word,” middle schooler Jameelyonna Horace said.

Tameka Turner, a mother of five, said her 12-year-old daughter was in the science class when the teacher used the slur. “[The students] all looked at each other in shock because of what they heard,” she told local news outlet Fox 29. She added that both she and her daughter provided a statement the day it occurred, and again on Tuesday, but has not heard from the school. “I got no phone call after the incident,” she said. “I think this is the most important time to call a parent.”

Cassandra Brown’s son was not in the classroom when the incident occurred, but he has told her that the teacher often ignores him or doesn’t answer his questions. “Then, I hear he used this word, so it makes the correlation. Okay, so this is why you weren’t helping my child because that’s how you feel?” she said.

According to the superintendent, New Jersey law prohibits them from commenting, but they are aware of the allegations against the teacher.
