There Will Never Be Another Fixed Rider Like Tom La Marche

Though we mountain bikers often think we are cool, we cannot hold a candle to another discipline of riding: fixed-gear freestyle.

The most influential fixie freestyle rider was Tom La Marche. Watch a profile of Lamarche from fixed gear company SMC below.

This video details La Marche’s career in freestyle riding From his early days getting air on his track bike to getting a part in a movie, Tom was a mainstay in the scene.

La Marche was a pioneer of riding fixed freestyle. He even helped Specialized design a purpose-built freestyle bike! Unfortunately, alongside his impressive set of tricks, he also took his fair share of falls. He chose to retire in 2012 after a brutal crash and now has a custom frame-building company.

Fixed gear tricks are very impressive because they require riders to always be pedaling. Unlike a bike with a freewheel, riders can’t perfectly ensure their pedals are in the right place. Somehow, Tom was able to land huge stairset 360s all the same.

This film gives a great lens into the punk rock nature of freestyle fixed gear. The intimate underground scene is undeniably cool. Mountain biking has a long way to go before becoming that core.
