NC lighthouse opens Friday for climbing season

NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WNCN) — Bodie Island Lighthouse is opening Friday for the summer climbing season, according to the National Park Service.

The light station, famous for its unique horizontal black and white stripes, is located at the northern end of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The street address is 8210 Bodie Island Lighthouse Rd. in Nags Head.

Bodie Island Lighthouse has 219 steps on a narrow, spiral staircase from the ground to the balcony. According to the NPS, going up the light station is equal to climbing a 10-story building.

Outer Banks wildlife refuge voted one of the best in the U.S.

Tickets are required to climb the lighthouse and can be purchased online starting at 7 a.m., but they can only be bought on the day of the intended climb and have set start times. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 for a child, senior or someone with a disability. The NPS recommends visitors make an account on recreation.gov prior to the date they want to buy tickets to make the process easier.

Cape Hatters Lighthouse, located at the southern end of the same national seashore, is not expected to open for climbing until the summer of 2026 due to restoration efforts, the NPS said.

A list of rules, restrictions and what to expect when visiting and climbing lighthouses at Cape Hatteras National Seashore are available online.
