Luxury fashion brands take Milan Design Week

What makes a star designer?
With the release of Gucci's documentary short "Who is Sabato De Sarno?", the brand is seemingly aiming to generate buzz around the designer after the success of his predecessor Alessandro Michele. José Criales-Unzueta poses the question in Vogue Business: "Are star designers born or made?" Social media has altered the way stars rise, but star designers — think Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford — become pop cultural icons in their own rite. In the wake of new creative director hires for many brands, Criales-Unzueta writes: "These designers now represent a clean slate for brands, and an opportunity to create new stars, but for brands to get bigger fast, designers need to get famous even faster." {Vogue Business/paywalled}
