MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – The Takoma Music School is housed at Tonal Park Recording Studio where musicians of all ages and skill levels receive one-on-one private lessons to help perfect their craft.

Takoma Music School founders Nikhil Rao and Adrian Rowland said they realized many musicians didn’t have positive experiences with other music schools.

“I noticed that a lot of these kids and adults would come in. Some adults had never played music before their whole life, maybe tried a little bit when they were younger, and just gave up really fast,” Rao said.

They decided to launch their own music school with a curriculum more tailored to each musician.

“Each individual’s connection to music is different,” Rao said. “One person may be Type A and love sheet music and likes structure and someone telling them what to do, while another person maybe wants it to be more playing by ear.”

The school covers several disciplines including piano, guitar and bass, drums, singing, music production and DJ lessons. Each discipline is taught by an instructor who has years of experience.

“They’re individuals that we can really trust not only to approach everyone’s unique way of learning but also get them far better at whatever instrument or field that they want to develop in,” Rowland said.

Rao and Rowland say they’ve been passionate about music most of their lives and now they’re excited to share their love of music with fellow musicians through this new school.

“Success is already happening,” Rowland said. “The fact that we’re able to do this at all. We’re kind of pinching ourselves, frankly, because this usually isn’t real or possible.”
