Mount Washington, NH Sees First Measurable Snow Of The Season
New England skiers rejoice! Mount Washington, New Hampshire received its first measurable snow of the season on Sunday, October 8th, 2023.
It wasn't much, but October snowfall on the peak of Mount Washington is an early sign that winter is just around the corner for the northeast. Take a look at the Instagram post shared by the Mount Washington Observatory below:
From the caption:
"The summit saw its first measurable snowfall of the season today, with 0.3" of snow measured so far. Below-freezing temperatures, high winds, and fog have also resulted in rime ice for most of the day. Temperatures aren't expected to rise above freezing until the end of the week, but winds will decrease slightly, and skies will begin to clear over the next several days."
It won't be long before ski resorts from Pennsylvania to Maine begin to fire up their snowmaking guns in anticipation for opening day. Wildcat Mountain, the closest resort to Mount Washington, has yet to announce a targeted opening day.
For all of my fellow Northeast skier brothers and sisters- are you ready? It was a long and dreary summer, but our good friend Father Winter will soon make his return.
