Mikey February Puts His Inimitable Style on Full Display in Mexico

A couple of years ago, I spent some time traipsing around Portugal. For a few days, Mikey February was part of the crew. He’s a very quiet guy with an easy smile and wry wit. He moves slowly and thoughtfully, kind of gliding through life like molasses running down the side of a glass. There’s something electric about that slowness, though, a certain je ne sais quoi that buzzes around just beneath the surface. It’s not as obvious on land, but in the water, that je ne sais quoi bursts out and takes over.

On one particular day, we woke with the dawn. The forecast for Supertubos looked promising, to say the least, and everyone wanted to get there as early as possible before the crowds showed up. When we arrived, the dawn’s chill still in the air, it was clear that it was shaping up to be a very, very good day. The day of the decade, as it turned out. Mikey sauntered down the beach, moving as though he was still dreaming, and suited up. Then, in a strange burst of speed from him, he sprinted towards the water and paddled out into a lineup full of bombs.

As Mikey is wont to do, he surfed about as well as anyone can surf in waves like the ones on offer. His surfing has that same lazy quickness about it; an ease that only comes with years of practice an in innate ability to read waves. Nothing looks forced and nothing looks difficult. Huge barrels with his arms at his sides, chin down as though he’s only half aware of what he’s doing. It is, quite frankly, pretty amazing to witness.

In the short film you see above, February made his way to Mexico and all that ease, style, and power was on full display.
