Mikaela Shiffrin Crashes Hard In Downhill Race

Mikaela Shiffrin, the US racer with a record 95 World Cup wins, crashed into the safety netting during her run at the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo today.

Medical staff on scene rushed over, and Mikaela was able to stand, but it looked like she may have an injury in her left leg.

This comes shortly after her partner, Alexander Aamodt Kilde, was airlifted to the hospital following a nasty downhill crash.

Mikaela only took one training run on the course, and reported that although she was "happy to be back in @cortinaskiworldcup because I love it here, yesterday was a little bit of a shock to the system being back on DH skis, and I had a couple 'scary' moments on the course (probably didn’t look as scary as it felt as I was running, because I’m a catastrophizer, hah who’s with meee?!)."

Unfortunately, her fears were not unfounded, as her crash puts the rest of her season in jeopardy.

Stephanie Venier (AUT) won the event, her first World Cup downhill victory in five years.

On the bright side, according to AP News, Shiffrin is “pretty sore,” but does not appear to have any ligament damage in her left knee.

She encouraged the rest of her teammates right after her fall, assuring them that “It’s all ok ladies, surface is money, you got this!”

We wish Mikaela Shiffrin a speedy recovery.
