Microsoft's 'Adorably All Digital' White Xbox Series X Leaked

We’ve known for a while that Microsoft has been working on an all-digital version of the Xbox Series X, and a first look at it has leaked. The first details of the new console were spotted in the leaked documents from Microsoft’s legal case against the FTC last year, which also gave us a taste of what Microsoft has planned for its next-generation Xbox consoles.

The new leak comes from Exputer, who have received images of the digital Xbox Series X, redesigned to be all-white. The proportions of the console have been kept the same as the original model, which is a deviation from Microsoft’s original plans to ship a cylindrical design. The only difference between the new console SKU and the old one is the absence of the disk slot and an upgrade to the heatsink for better heat dissipation.

The digital Xbox Series X is expected to ship this summer and will cost less than the standard Series X, which goes for $499 in the US. The “adorably all-digital” Xbox, as per Microsoft’s court documents, makes sense for the company given its aversion to shipping complete builds of games on disk. Many Xbox games, which utilize Smart Delivery, only contain a part of the build on disk.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has given its current-gen consoles a fresh coat of paint. The Xbox Series S was refreshed to include a 1TB SSD with the new SKU being in all-black.

This is in stark contrast to Phil Spencer’s comments about game preservation. Speaking to Axios, Spencer has gone on record to advocate for better software emulation. “My hope (and I think I have to present it that way as of now) is as an industry we'd work on legal emulation that allowed modern hardware to run any (within reason) older executable allowing someone to play any game,” he said.

Xbox is expected to announce the all-digital Xbox Series X imminently and has also teased new hardware, rumored to be a handheld, to launch by the end of the year.
