Mid-lengths are so hot right now. Everyone’s jumping on the train, and Kelly Slater is included with everyone. His latest offering? The Boss Up.

For a while there, they were scorned by people who are dedicated to riding the same standard shortboard for every session because otherwise, you must be bad at surfing. But in recent years, things have changed a bit. More and more people are realizing that the same shortboard Kelly Slater or John John Florence is actually not a great idea.

A better idea is to ride a surfboard that suits your surfing and your typical waves. If you are John John Florence and surf on the North Shore regularly, sure, a Pyzel Ghost is a good option for your daily driver. But if you’re just an average surfer who surfs average waves, maybe it’s not. Hell, even the best in the world are coming around to the spice that variety brings, and Michel Bourez is one of them.

He took out the Boss Up at home in Tahiti, and while it does look a little strange to see Bourez surfing a mid length, it certainly looks fun.

“The shape was designed to work well in both weak waves as well as heavier conditions,” the Firewire team wrote. “It can cruise across flat wave faces while also shoot through cavernous overhead tubes. The Boss Up is the board you would travel with if you could only bring one board with you. Your one board quiver with maximum performance in a purely versatile package.

Bourez has been riding the Boss Up in all sorts of conditions, and reportedly loves it in all of them.
