Memorial trees planted on Arbor Day in Groton

Apr. 26—GROTON — People gathered Friday for an Arbor Day Celebration at the Thrive55+ Active Living Center.

Six trees ―Japanese snowbell, Armstrong maples, and Eastern redbuds ― had been donated by family members or friends in memory of Steve Cary, Gloria Chavez, Mary Coleman, Wally Post, John Schuster and William Wolter.

Mark Berry, director of Groton Parks and Recreation, said Groton has been a 'Tree City' for 28 years. To be a Tree City recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation, towns must be committed to caring for their urban trees.

The town is working on street inventory, looking for areas that don't have enough trees, areas that have too many trees and areas that need a diversity of trees.

The event was sponsored by the Town of Groton Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments.
