Meet the Tuscaloosa teenager who has already earned three college degrees

At just 17 years old, LeAnna Roberts of Tuscaloosa has earned her third college degree in two years.

Roberts graduated from the University of Alabama with a master of business administration degree on May 4. This achievement comes just one year after Roberts graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology in May 2023.

Roberts, who aspires to make a career in the medical field, said it was an exciting and surreal experience to walk across the stage as a UA graduate for the second time.

"It was a surreal feeling to once again be able to celebrate with family and friends and to celebrate a year of hard work. It's hard to believe I just graduated last year with my bachelors degree," Roberts said.

The Central High School graduate began studying at UA at the age of 15, after earning her associate's degree from Shelton State Community College.

Roberts finished high school early and through dual enrollment, which allows students to take college classes while they're still in high school, she graduated from Central High School and Shelton State on the same day.

Roberts said she doesn't let her age define her or discourage her from achieving her goals. Despite the achievement of earning three degrees as a teenager, Roberts said she still feels like a normal person.

"Fortunately, my friends and family around me only see me as LeAnna, not my age or my accomplishments ... so I pretty much see myself the same way," she said.

During her undergraduate year, Roberts spent her time volunteering at DCH Regional Medical Center. She was also an active member of several honor societies. In April, Roberts was named one of the two Outstanding Graduate Students during the Tapping on the Mound ceremony.

As for her career plans, Roberts said she hopes to make a positive impact in the medical field and focus on health care disparities in rural communities.

"I've been drawn to the medical field for as long as I can remeber, since I was young," Roberts said.

She said her interest in health care stemmed from seeing her grandparents, who lived in rural Alabama, face health-related challenges.

"So, knowing that's the reality for so many people and that I have the ability to gve the support system to do something about that is what drives me and is the ultimate end goal for me," said Roberts.

Balance is a key factor for Roberts as she prioritizes academics while still making time to enjoy being a teenager.

Outside of academics, Roberts said she enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends. The teen has also taken some golf lessons.

Roberts said she credits her parents for her drive and said they have always been supportive during her academic journey.

Roberts said her next venture includes more education. She will continue her education in June at UAB where she plans to graduate with another master's degree in May 2025. After that, it's on to medical school.
