Meals on Wheels Volunteer Luncheon a success

Apr. 30—GREENSBURG — Greensburg Meals on Wheels Director Diana Robbins hosted the local organization's annual volunteer luncheon Wednesday at the Branch Coffeehouse on the west side of the Greensburg Square.

As the quests enjoyed a buffet lunch catered by The Beach Tiki Bar, Robbins welcomed them by name as she shared news from the year and humorous stories about drivers and clients.

"We could have our fundraisers and accept many donations from the entire county, but without our drivers there would be no program. Not only do these people come weekly to help us, but they also come to check on our clients," Robbins said.

She then honored each driver, giving them gas cards and sharing humorous anecdotes about each of them.

What was most remarkable about the event was experiencing the sense of community Robbins has created for her drivers. During the luncheon, each joined her in laughing and sharing stories. It is apparent each driver enjoys the human contact as much as the clients they serve daily.

Greensburg Meals on Wheels drivers are Carol Bishop, Christy Bokelman, Heather Miller, Sylvia Waters, Shannon Roberts, Diane Simmons, Christy Jarvis, Linda Ortman, Gary Ortman, Debbie Coy, Brian Coy, Garry Hadler, Ford Kennelley, Carol Bishop, Rocky Robbins, Brandy Bishop, Cathy Phillips, Marilyn Woods, Susan Wilson, Joe Springmeyer, Kim Springmeyer and Emily Hardy.

Greensburg Meals on Wheels is charged $6.50 per meal, and clients are charged $2.40 for each meal. Robbins makes up for the shortfall with grants, Thrive Alliance support, personal and business donations and fundraisers like "Breakfast with Santa" in December, "Dancing with the Stars" in February, and several "10% of the price for your meal" donations from local restaurants.

Greensburg Meals on Wheels also sells a $5 annual discount card, offering discounts from Expression Florist, Stones' Family Restaurant, Tree City Brew Co., Baker Design Wear, Dr. Ashburn's Pepper Emporium, Denim and Honey Boutique and multiple chain restaurants like Dairy Queen and Arby's, to name a few.
