May 1: Water-wise shift in outdoor watering schedules

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) wants to remind everyone that Wednesday, May 1, is the time to shift outdoor watering schedules to before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

According to Springs Utilities, when running during the heat of the day, sprinklers can lose a lot of water to evaporation, and following this water-wise schedule can help prevent that loss. Customers can water lawns up to three days a week but should adjust how frequently they water lawns each month according to the recommended lawn watering schedules.

These guidelines remain in place until October 15, when customers should cut back to watering twice a month during warm days.

Springs Utilities said these water-wise rules help prevent unnecessary water loss in our community and are tailored to support healthy landscapes in our semi-arid region while optimizing water use.

Other year-round rules include:

  • Don’t let water pool on hard surfaces or flow down gutters.

  • Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days

  • Use a shut-off nozzle when washing anything with a hose

  • Clean hard surfaces (driveways, sidewalks, etc.) with water only if there is a public health and safety concern.
