At Manitowoc Public Library this week: 'Art as Poetry/Poetry as Art,' story times, Family Yoga and more

MANITOWOC – Family Activity Night at Manitowoc Public Library May 21 will feature Waves Yoga family instructor Lauren Philippsen offering a beginner-friendly class.

It's one of the many activities planned at the library this week.

Ongoing through June 6

The “Art as Poetry/Poetry as Art” exhibit is on display on the library’s first floor through June 6. The exhibit is sponsored by the Lakeshore Artists Guild and is a “call-and-response” exhibit that brings together 20 artists and 20 poets resulting in 40 poems and 40 works of art.

Attend Baby Storytime

9:30 a.m. May 16

This is 20 minutes of stories, songs, rhymes, bounces, parachute activities and bubbles followed by 20 minutes of playtime for developmental ages 0-2 and their siblings.

10:30 a.m. May 16

Join in singing, talking, reading, creating and playing at this inclusive story time for families with preschoolers. Recommended for developmental ages 2-5 and siblings.

Noon to 12:45 p.m. May 16

This series is livestreamed on the library’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. It features a behind-the-scenes look at the library’s goings on. This month’s guests include Kaonou Hang-Vue, organizer of the Hmong Cultural Symposium, and Tony Plekan, Public Services associate, and Sharon Verbeten, Youth Services manager, talking about the Summer Reading Program.

6-7 p.m. May 16

A book discussion on Temple Grandin’s “Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism” will be held in the library’s second-floor board room.

6-7:30 p.m. May 16

“Teen Hang-Out: Drop and Drag Squeegee Paintings” will be held in the Balkansky Community Room. The program is for ages 11-18. This is abstract art at its easiest, and most fun. Join in Family Yoga

6:30-7:15 p.m. May 21

The library’s next Family Activity Night will be Family Yoga, an evening of movement and fun with Lauren Philippsen, Waves Yoga family instructor. The beginner-friendly class will introduce yoga through a series of games, breathing techniques and imaginative activities. Kids will especially love the partner poses. Take a yoga mat or beach towel and dress in comfortable clothing.

Get employment and career assistance

Department of Workforce Development staff provide onsite services in MPL’s Franklin Street Room for both Employment Assistance and Career Counseling between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesdays.

  • Drop-In Employment Assistance: DWD staff will provide onsite services, including resume writing, assistance with online applications, assistance registering in Job Center of Wisconsin, and more. No appointment needed.

  • Career Counseling: Dealing with a job loss or considering a career change? Career and employment counseling may help. A licensed career counselor can assist with providing support and encouragement, assisting with the exploration of career and self-assessments, assisting with reviewing labor market information, removing and overcoming obstacles, and creating an individualized employment plan to help you turn your career vision into a reality. A career counselor can also provide you with the tools, feedback and resources you need to be successful in your job search.
