Look Back ... to no bar/restaurant district for now in city, 1999

Mar. 18—March 18, 1949, in The Star: Funeral services were held this afternoon at First Methodist Church in Anniston for George Harrison Brummel, age 84, a pioneer resident of Anniston and a prominent civic and religious leader. A native of Baltimore, Mr. Brummel came to Anniston in the early 1880s and in his early years operated a buggy and carriage shop here. He was a Methodist, a Mason and a former Anniston city councilman. Survivors include his widow, Elizabeth, and three sons and a daughter, all of Anniston, as well as two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

March 18, 1999, in The Star: Despite the support given to the proposal by the Anniston Planning Commission and Mayor Gene Stedham, the idea to cluster bars and restaurant into a downtown Anniston district appears to have died on the vine. Resident objections, as well as questions about whether there's a market for an entertainment district, have killed interest in the project. "I guess we're just not ready. I don't see the city making any changes at this point," said Stedham.
