Lockhart barbecue spot nominated for ‘best new restaurant’ in the country

LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) — A barbecue location in Lockhart was nominated for the James Beard Foundation’s 2024 Best New Restaurant award.

Barbs-B-Q, located at 102 East Market Street, was the only Texas location among the list of other nominees in the category.

The restaurant, which is open on weekends from 11 a.m. until sold out, offers brisket, beef ribs, Molotov pork ribs, turkey and more, as well as private classes.

The other nominees in the category include:

  • Bar Bacetto in Waitsburg, Washington

  • Chez Noir in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

  • Comfort Kitchen in Dorchester, Massachusetts

  • Dakar NOLA in New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Hayward in McMinnville, Oregon

  • Kaya in Orlando, Florida

  • Kisser in Nashville, Tennessee

  • Oro by Nixta in Minneapolis, Minnesota

  • Shan in Bozeman, Montana

The award presentation is set to be livestreamed June 10 on Eater, according to the foundation.

Two other Texas restaurants were also nominated for the foundation’s top honors.

Convenience West in Marfa and Mixtli in San Antonio were selected as contenders for the most “outstanding” restaurant.

Convenience West is a barbecue spot that opened in 2017. The restaurant was only open Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. until sold out.

Mixtli is a Mexican restaurant established in 2013, and it said it would change its menu every 45 days to offer a tour of Mexican gastronomy.
