Comic Book Day: Strikes Back | Bookmark Art Contest

Ongoing through 5 p.m. May 3

For “Comic Book Day: Strikes Back” May 4, Manitowoc Public Library is looking for artists to create one-of-a-kind bookmark designs for a Bookmark Art Contest. Stop by the Youth Services Desk and pick up a blank bookmark to decorate. You can take inspiration from Star Wars, comic books or create something all your own. Return your bookmark to the library by 5 p.m. May 3 to be included in the contest. Your design will be featured in a public display May 4, where the public will vote for their favorite out-of-this-world pieces of art. The contest is open to all ages. Prizes will be awarded to the following:

  • Most Voted Bookmark — Ages 9 and younger

  • Most Voted Bookmark — Ages 10-17

  • Most Voted Bookmark — Ages 18 and older

  • Bonus prizes will go to the most voted Star Wars design and most voted comic book-themed design

Arbor Day: Manitowoc's dedication to urban forestry celebrated with Tree City USA award, to be presented during Arbor Day event April 26

'Art as Poetry/Poetry as Art' exhibit

Ongoing through June 6

Sponsored by the Lakeshore Artists Guild, this “call and response” exhibit is a collaboration between 20 artists and 20 poets resulting in 40 poems and 40 artworks. Each artist submitted an original artwork and each poet submitted an original poem. Participants selected the poem or artwork that spoke to them, and then created new works inspired by their choices. Artwork will be on display on the library’s first floor.

Baby Storytime

9:30 a.m. April 25, May 1 and May 2

Baby Storytime is 20 minutes of stories, songs, rhymes, bounces, parachute activities and bubbles, followed by 20 minutes of playtime. Baby Storytime is recommended for developmental ages 0-2 and siblings are always welcome. All library story times are inclusive and welcoming. You are encouraged to attend the story time that best meets your family's developmental needs. Registration is not required.

Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. April 25, May 1 and May 2

Join the library in singing, talking, reading, creating and playing at this inclusive story time for families with preschoolers. Storytime focuses on concepts such as life skills, counting, colors, emotions, patterns and the alphabet. It's a great opportunity to meet new friends, socialize and strengthen early literacy skills. Storytime is recommended for developmental ages 2-5 and siblings are always welcome. Registration is not required.

Library closing early for staff development

April 26 at noon

The library will be closing at noon April 26 for an afternoon of staff development. Normal hours will resume at 9 a.m. April 27.

DWD employment assistance and career counseling

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays

The Department of Workforce Development staff is providing onsite services in MPL’s Franklin Street Room for both Employment Assistance and Career Counseling, Here are some of the specifics:

  • Drop-In Employment Assistance: Department of Workforce Development staff will provide onsite services, including resume writing, assistance with online applications, assistance registering in Job Center of Wisconsin, and more. No appointment needed.

  • Career Counseling: Dealing with a job loss or considering a career change? Career and employment counseling may help. A licensed career counselor can assist with providing support and encouragement, assisting with the exploration of career and self-assessments, assisting with reviewing labor market information, removing and overcoming obstacles, and creating an individualized employment plan to help you turn your career vision into a reality. A career counselor can also provide you with the tools, feedback and resources you need to be successful in your job search. Drop-In Chess Club

6-7:30 p.m. May 1

Want to improve your memory and concentration, or hone your logical thinking skills while having fun? Make a smart move — join the Drop-In Chess Club at MPL. All abilities and ages (6 years plus) are welcome, but no formal instruction will be offered. Boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning. No registration is required, but remember that children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
