Library announces theme, opening date for summer reading program

May 13—The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library has announced the theme for its annual summer reading program.

This year's theme is titled "Adventure Begins at Your Library" and the KHCPL plans to kick off the event June 7, the same day as the Strawberry Festival. During the kickoff event, people will be invited to visit the main KHCPL branch, 220 N. Union St., to sign up for the program, pick up prizes, play a few games, make crafts and have a snack.

The summer reading program is open to all ages and encourages participants to keep a reading streak.

Those who are able to keep a streak will be rewarded with age-appropriate prizes every week.

The challenge ends July 19, but participants can pick up prizes through July 27.

Among the top prizes is a ticket to the Splish Splash Final Bash, an annual pool party at Kokomo Beach open to those who complete the reading program. The pool party is scheduled for July 25.

The library will complement the reading challenge with camping-themed events. In June, Royal Events Entertainment will hold a meet and greet with two wilderness explorers at the library. Then, in July, reality TV survivalist Clint Jivoin will be at the library to share tips on how to live off the land. Other events include a mushroom growing class, fantasy map making and an adult technology camp.
