Lansing group helps struggling families on Mother’s Day

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– While some families are facing homelessness in the Lansing area, one group on Sunday looked to help out struggling moms in Reutter Park.

“We expect to serve anywhere between two and three-hundred people,” Mike Karl said, owner of the Cardboard Prophets group and one of the organizers of the Mother’s Day event. “Every year, my mother organizes ‘Pretty Purses in the Park’ for homeless mothers those that are in shelters, people in need, anyone that really needs a blessing, and we want to be there and bring a smile to a mother’s face on this important day.”

People were treated to a free meal, shoes and clothes, and each got a purse with feminine hygiene products.

Karl said the day is more than just about gift-giving, but instead, helping those who are one of the pillars of a family.

“We supply everything, we have food, we have personal care items, diapers, clothing, but we also have the pretty purses that are filled with goodies, and personal care items, things like that that will bless a mother that may be staying outside or maybe less fortunate and give them just a hand up,” he said.

Joanne Beam who attended the event said we all need to come together and help out different moms in the community.

“You don’t understand right now what’s going on in the life, I mean, it’s a lot going on right now. And we just need to show more love and give more compliments and try to build people up instead of dragging them down,” she said. “If there’s some things that you’re struggling through, everyone’s struggling right now you’re not the only one.”
