Lakey Peterson is a very good surfer. She’s not only very good, but very consistent. Although a world title has evaded her (so far), she’s always in the conversation. But one does not become a world-class surfer with such consistency by simply mucking around at the beach. Peterson, like so many others at the top of their games, works at it.

Up until relatively recently, “surf workouts” weren’t really a thing. Surfers just sent it, then paddled in and partied as hard as they could. But in the last decade or so, a focus on body mechanics has taken on a little more importance, and it’s not just so that surfers can win events.

Keeping your body in tune is a great way to ensure you’re not only performing better, but that you can perform better for longer. That old adage “use it or lose it” comes to mind, and Peterson plans on using it.

That said, she’s a real stickler for mobility exercises. Without mobility, surfing well is nearly impossible. Peterson fields requests on her YouTube channel, and many viewers were asking for a rundown on what, exactly, she does to maintain her fitness levels.

She also happens to be married to a doctor of osteopathy who’s also a personal trainer and specializes in treatment, performance, and rehabilitation, which is undoubtedly helpful. The routine you see above is his prescription to keep those joints oiled and the muscles limber.
