Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Adds "Surprise" Lift To The Mix As More Terrain Opens

Heavenly Mountain Resort, California, announced the opening of four additional lifts today, one of which—the Dipper Express—was a "surprise," according to the Resort.

Heavenly Mountain Resort now has 14 of its 27 lifts open. However, only 9% of its terrain offerings are available. In contrast with last winter, the Lake Tahoe area, where the Resort is located, has had few large snowstorms this ski season.

Still, Heavenly is working hard to open more terrain, relying heavily on its snowmaking system. In addition to the new lifts, the Resort opened the Orion, Von Schmidt, Upper Comet, and Easy Street runs today. Good terrain operations news came earlier this week, too, when Heavenly fired up the Sky Express lift with top-to-bottom skiing and riding on Ridge Run.

Heavenly aims to open the Lakeview Terrain Park, which boasts small/medium-sized jumps, rails, and boxes—all with views of Lake Tahoe—in the coming days.

The weather could bring additional snow to Heavenly early next week, provided the freezing level remains low, bringing a much-need potential reset to the Resort. Rain is possible, too, particularly on Heavenly's lower mountain.

But that's how it goes. Skiing, hate or love it, will always be at the whims of the snow gods. Those resorts that effectively work alongside Mother Nature fare the best in the long run.

"Every winter is different. As we saw last year, some winter seasons allow us to open a lot of terrain in a short period of time, and others (like this season), it's a more of a gradual start," wrote Tom Fortune, Heavenly's VP and COO in a recent blog post.
