Lake Tahoe Resort Reopening After 4-Day Storm Closure

After digging out from the 4-day storm that hit Tahoe this weekend, Sierra-at-Tahoe is ready to reopen, Tuesday, March 5 with limited operations.

Before reopening at full capacity, a few more days of digging will be necessary.

The resort is opening with slight delays due to the continual work needed, with an estimated time of 10:00 AM. Easy Rider Express and Rock Garden will be the first to spin.

There is the potential late afternoon opening of West Bowl, but the resort warns guests not to get their hopes too high for this terrain expansion. Lastly on tap is Nob Hill.

Grandview Express and the east side of the resort will not open today due to the extensive amount of snow safety that still requires completion.

Officials at Sierra-at-Tahoe report that the "biggest storm of the season" was unique due to the sustained record high winds which created wind drifts and packed the snow down.

While this last storm delivered 72" (approx 6ft) at the summit with a base depth of 141", skiers were hoping for blower pow, only to find blow-ed pow from the high winds.

Still, powder stashes are everywhere, and skiers of Sierra-at-Tahoe are still getting lift-accessible, fresh tracks at their disposal today.

Patrol at Sierra-at-Tahoe reported the current snow density at 20%, which you would anticipate being closer to 8-9% given the current temperatures, but the intense winds throughout the storm continually compacted the snow.

However, this may be a silver lining in disguise: officials at the resort explain that this helps fill in all the nooks and crannies that were still exposed before the storm. Additionally, this sets up the resort with the base they needed to keep the mountain open for spring skiing as long as Mother Nature continues to deliver.

With the way this winter has turned around in Tahoe, and resorts such as Palisades Tahoe announcing they are officially open until the end of May due to the snow accumulation last month, spring skiing is a high possibility.
