Kingsport’s “Kid Power” event brings community resources to families with kids

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — An annual event titled “Kid Power” was held at the Kingsport Civic Auditorium on Saturday, which connected families with children to vital community resources.

According to organizers, the event is in its 21st year and aims to “promote the mental wellness of children, youth and their families.”

Montgomery Greer, senior director of school-based services for Frontier Health, told News Channel 11 that just like adults, many kids need extra support for their mental well-being.

“We’re here to raise awareness for children’s mental health because we do strongly believe that even our children need that extra support, and we’re here to provide community resources for their families and for the kids in the area so that they know what’s available to them,” she said.

“We continue to see growing issues with children’s behavioral health needs,” said Tim Perry, Sr. VP of Outpatient Services. “Therefore, this event is a great way to connect families and children to resources in our community. Kid power helps give families a chance to connect with other families and children and learn about these resources while having some fun at the same time.”

Agencies and businesses that help keep this annual event going include Food City, TN Voices, ETSU Health, Department of TN Substance Abuse Services, System of Care Across TN, TN Department of Health, Read-N-Play, Mental Health Association and Frontier Health.

Along with several outreach coordinators for area healthcare centers and programs, some fun activities and games were available to kids at the event.
