Killington, VT Confirms Intention To Stay Open For Skiing Into June

Officials at Killington, VT, announced that their forecast ahead looks beautiful and that "The Beast is serving bodacious spring conditions."

Perhaps more importantly, officials at Killington noted that "The Superstar Express is open 7 days a week through May 5th, when we'll switch to spring hours." See below.

All lifts except for the Superstar Express have been closed for the 2023/24 winter season.

While there is plenty of Intermediate terrain off Superstar Express, Killington no longer has beginner terrain open:

"Today, we plan to be skiing on 18 trails with temperatures in the high 30’s and sunny skies. Snow conditions are firm this morning but will soften up quickly once the sun comes out. The grooming team put down some cord on Nivis Walk, Superstar, Skyelark, and more last night so get up here early if you want to shred some fast morning turns."

The Superstar Express services Superstar, Skyehawk, Skyelark, Somewhere Glades, Nowhere Glades, Skye Bites, and Bittersweet, among others.

Killington has received 239 inches of snowfall this season, and has a base depth of 17 inches.

We caught up with Kristel, the Brand Marketing and Communications Manager at Killington, to ask her about how and why Superstar is able to keep spinning through May and into June.

Killington's Kristel Killary Q&A

Why do you choose Superstar to run the longest? Is it because of the terrain that it services or is there some other reason?

"The reason behind it isn't necessarily the lift, it's the trail. We host the Women's World Cup every Thanksgiving weekend and it's on Superstar trail. So we started building that base in October and we continue to make snow on it through snow the end of March typically. It has the deepest base of any trail at the resort."

Do you know how skiers at Killington are feeling about skiing the resort right now? Have people been really into the spring skiing? What are the vibes?

"Spring at Killington is my personal favorite, and not just because of the snow, but because of those vibes. We have our umbrella deck open at the bottom of Superstar, it's called the Roaring Brooke Umbrella bar. There's a huge Michelob Ultra deck and everyone can hang out outside and have drinks.

We usually barbecue food, and there's live music and we just call it deck days. I would say the aprés is just as important as the skiing, in the spring."

How was your season overall? I know Vermont had a bit of a warm winter, but it seems like all the resorts actually fared pretty well.

"It was a turbulent winter. It would get cold, we'd make a ton of snow, and then it would get warm. I know the snow making team was resurfacing a lot. They put in a lot of hard work to make it the season it was. And then it turned around in March. We had a ton of snow in March and then we got a huge storm the beginning of April. So you know, we're looking ahead to June with the plan to stay open as long as possible.

So you could stay open into June, you think?

"Yes, and we have in the past. The goal for us is always June."

That's a really long season, especially for the East Coast. How often is Superstar groomed at this point in the season?

"Right now, we're still grooming it every night. It's not a wall-to-wall groom. They'll leave bumps on the sides, they'll groom the center and then every so often they'll groom wall to wall. But no, we are not at the point yet where we're not grooming nightly.

Even in June last year, I think the night before closing, they did groom it because we have this technology now in some of our grooming tractors that can see the snow depth so that they can push snow from where it's deeper into a thin area."

That sounds fun. Having part of it be groomed and then leaving some bumps for everyone who wants moguls.

"Yeah. At the end of the day though, it's all moguls because it's soft . When it's warm, it's really chopped up after the first hour. But we even have a terrain park. Our spring terrain park just opened on Monday."

You have one specifically for spring?

"We closed our last regular terrain park on on Sunday and by Monday morning we had our spring popup park over on Skyhawk."

That's fun. Spring really brings out the park skiers, too. Is there anything else that you think people should know about Superstar or spring skiing at Killington?

"We're open seven days a week through May 5th and then we go to Fridays to Sundays until the snow runs out. ."
