In the middle of winter, just as I was starting to grow tired of the chunky boots I’d started wearing in the fall, Katie Holmes convinced me to ditch them altogether. When she stepped out in a pair of loafers at the start of February, I took it as my sign to do the same and discovered that prematurely moving into spring footwear made my winter wardrobe feel a whole lot fresher. And just last week, she did it again, breaking out a summer staple well ahead of the season.

When the actress stepped out in New York City, she crafted a spring look that was at the same time both sophisticated and casual. Her button-down top and trousers both had an oversized silhouette that made the otherwise stuffy pieces feel more everyday-appropriate. And by pairing them with classic, all-black Birkenstock sandals, she made the outfit look even more effortlessly cool.

Birkenstock’s sandals have long been a summer staple, with stars including Reese Witherspoon, Margot Robbie, and Cameron Diaz reaching for the easy, slide-on style, but Holmes proved they’re just as good with breezy spring staples. She slid on a pair of Arizona sandals, which are loved for both their practicality and style and designed with a cork footbed that shapes to the foot, two wide, adjustable straps that keep the shoe in place, and metal buckles.
